Divest from Policing. Invest in Community.
Sexual Assault Voices of Edmonton stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter Edmonton in their demand for Edmonton to invest in community and divest from policing. In addition to the deep roots of white supremacy and history of upholding systems of oppression in policing, we know that policing practices fail to bring justice for victim/survivors and often even increase trauma symptoms. Together with survivors and our community, we are building a vision of a future without sexualized violence, and an anti-racist, survivor-centric violence response system that can get us there. When people hear about responding to and preventing sexual violence without police, they sometimes wonder why this is necessary, or how it can happen. We have assembled links below to articles and further reading on the topic - the opinions of these authors are their own and do not necessarily reflect the position of Sexual Assault Voices of Edmonton. Rather, they represent a number of different viewpoints on the issue.
